Monastery of Alcobaça
The Saint Mary of Alcobaça Monastaire (also known as Alcobaça Monastaire), is the first trull gotic work in portuguese soil. The Monastery of Santa Maria d'Alcobaça, north of Lisbon, was founded in the 12th century by King Alfonso I. Its size, the purity of its architectural style, the beauty of the materials and the care with which it was built make this a masterpiece of Cistercian Gothic art.
This place belongs to the Group: Portuguese 7 Wonders
One of the first Cistercian monastic foundations in Portugal, the Monastery of Alcobaça became the main House of this religious order, thanks to a continuous royal protection policy that began with King Afonso Henriques, Portugal’s first King. Its extant medieval structures are unique in the world, and so are its later additions from the 16th through to the 18th centuries, as they bear testimony to the evolution of Portuguese architecture.
